INTRODUCTION - September 2008

Hi All
Well we seem to becoming to the end of the show season now with a couple of local events still to come, The Rougham show is popular with Area members and those that go always seem to pay return visits. The Castle Point (Canvey Island) show is a nice low key event mainly bus/public transport orientated but it usually has a good turn out of vintage cars and often a surprisingly large military vehicle content.

I have been attending the Hylands House Veterans Day 2009 planning meetings,  a two day event with evening entertainment, more of which later in the newsletter.

I have been busy carrying out several vehicle verifications over the past weeks/months for new members with newly restored vehicles or old members with recently restored vehicles. This is to enable them to be taxed etc. A tip here if you are restoring a vehicle you don’t have to wait until it is completed to obtain the authentication.
I would recommend you do it sooner than that, say half or three quarters into the restoration, other wise you have a vehicle waiting to go that you can’t use until someone comes round and verifies it and as we are all volunteers fitting this in when we can, it’s not always a prompt service.. In addition chassis/engine numbers etc are often easier to read while the vehicle is still in bits so that makes life easier as well. Also bear in mind these numbers have to be read not only by the person doing the verification but also by the DVLA Inspector who often, but not always, comes round as well, so painting over chassis/engine numbers might not be a good idea or if you are going to wait till the vehicles have been inspected and you have the tax disc..

Christmas Celebration -  Its about that time when we need to think about what we want to do for the Area Christmas Dinner any thoughts? Please contact me.

.DAMYNS HALL “MILITARY AND FLYING MACHINES”  SHOW 9th & 10th August 2008

W have had lots of good reports about the Show and the Airfield are keen for us to continue. It’s unlikely the Zeppelin will be in attendance next year, however we are assured it will be back in the future. Plans and bookings are already under way for next year. We plan to have a large marquee for use during the day and for the evening entertainment so we don’t have to be affected so much by the weather. We have taken on board the improvement suggestions and plan extra vending and toilet facilities etc.

THIS NEWSLETTER

If you are receiving the newsletter by post and you have an email address that I can send Olive Drab by email to you please could you let me have it. I currently send out 80 newsletters by post which takes time and club money. So anything that can be done to reduce these would be appreciated.

EVENTS

HYLANDS HOUSE

27/28TH  JUNE 2009 Background:
I have an article on the house during wartime which I will put in a later newsletter. But for those that don’t know Hylands House and its massive grounds in Chelmsford was used during the First World war as a hospital and in the Second was the base for, among other things, the SAS who were based and trained there prior to D Day. This includes the now legendary story of Paddy Maine getting a jeep stuck halfway up the stair case while trying to drive upstairs. Its is said the lady owner of the house came out of her bedroom saw the stuck Jeep and turned round and went back to bed. The vehicle had to be taken apart to get it back down. The staircase has now been restored and I would guess you might have to be under, let’s say a certain influence, to think you could actually succeed. I have suggested putting a jeep in the House for the event but let us see!

Interestingly the House now has a witness evidence of this from a former SAS person who also states this was only part of the story as the main object was to see how many Jeeps would fit into the ground floor of the house. There are also some other interesting bits which I can’t repeat here. I have asked for a copy of the story which I can pass on when I get it. In addition there was an RAF presence there as well.

The event will be free to the public managed by the Chelmsford Council/ Hylands House management along similar lines as the event held there previously. Highlighting the military veterans from all world wars and post WW 2 conflicts with various local organisations represented It is planned to have exhibitors and displays in the House rooms, the House has now completed its restoration

There will be a 40’s Big Band for the Saturday evening free entry to members in uniform. On the Sunday a massive RAF Cadet parade with up to a thousand cadets From our point of view the event will be mainly static and the organisers wish us to display similar to the previous event in that we need to focus on the display side so it might be worth while for you to consider getting together with like minded people and putting on a series of individual or group static/living history displays of vehicles and equipment which we know always generates a lot of interest. The Council has agreed to make a donation to the Essex Area MVT for our support of this event.

 FOR SALE

I have had a call from a  Gentleman selling a Morris Quad.  I don’t know the condition but it is not a runner and I think has a crane on the back which can be removed. I believe he might have some kit with it as well (including some shells) but from his description I am not sure what they are although logically they would be 25pdr.

Of more interest (possibly) he has an RB Aircraft refueler for sale it’s the “Battle of Britain” type three wheeler one as in Duxford and the Hendon Museum and I would suggest very rare, I do not know its condition running gear/engine is complete but I gather the body work needs considerable work Price by negotiation but he is not asking the earth. .  Tel 01708 223457

If you want to place a picture of your vehicle or vehicles on our Essex Area web site send them to me or pass them to Nigel at the meeting.
